“Wealth is the ability to fully experience life.” ~ Henry David Thoreau
About ten years ago, I woke up from a nightmare. I was DEEP in debt trying to pay for a brand new custom built house, several cars, credit cards, a boat, toys, and loads of other stuff. Why? Did I need all that stuff? Why was I working my ass off to pay for crap I didn’t need?
I was living the American Dream. But how is being knee-deep in debt and working all the time a dream?
Today, I call that the “Average American Dream” or the “Nightmare.” And it’s no longer my dream.
So what is the Average American Dream?
Shelve your dreams – get an education – get a job – work hard – buy a car (then buy a better car) – buy a house (then buy a bigger house) – have kids – buy loads of stuff to fill your home – your garage and maybe even a storage locker – enjoy 10 days of vacation per year (if you’re lucky) – work until you retire to pay for it all.
FINALLY, after all that, it’s time to do the things you dreamed of doing. IF you can afford your dreams or are in good enough health by that time you’re in your late sixties or early seventies.
Does that really sound like a dream to you? Putting your goals aside until you’re old? Getting deep into debt starting with your education and working your life away to pay for it all, so that you can finally enjoy everything once you’re old?
I bet you never realized the “Average American Dream” is all about keeping you broke, in debt and a slave to American corporations and government.
Yeah, yeah, I know. I just started sounding like a conspiracist theorist, right?
But think about it.
It’s drilled into our very core from the time we’re old enough to understand that the way to happiness in American society is to live the American Dream. And who really benefits from the American Dream?
It’s NOT you.
What if I told you there is another way?
David and I are doing it! We’re living our dream! And A LOT of other people in our lives are doing it as well!
It’s not always easy, but I can tell you that we are living a better quality of life because we chose to stop living the “Average American Dream.”
Getting started is as easy as deciding you want something different.
You’ll have to get it out of your head that having money and stuff is the only way to happiness. Money is just part of the equation. And stuff is well…just stuff.
You do need money to buy the things you need: like shelter, food, clothing, the necessities of life and a little extra for fun things. But real wealth isn’t about being in debt or having all the money in the world.
True wealth is your quality of life.
How do you feel about your life? Are you doing things that help you feel fulfilled, happy and satisfied? Or are you going into debt to live the “Average American Dream” and be “Successful” in the eyes of society? Shouldn’t you get to determine what your success looks like?
Is something missing? Do you feel like you’re working your ass off and not really getting anywhere? And what about your dreams? Are they still gathering dust on that shelf?
Why not make it about your dream?
So what if your dreams don’t look like everyone else’s! And your idea of success doesn’t match the “Average American Dream.”
It’s about living YOUR life, not the one determined for you by someone else. And there are A LOT of ways to fulfill your dreams. You do have CHOICES.
Are they going to be handed to you?
NO, you’ll have to reach out and take them.
You will have to be dedicated and work for your choices. And in the beginning, you’ll probably have to work hard.
At a recent business expo, the speaker Bill Walsh said:
“An entrepreneur is the only person who will work 80 hours a week to get out of working 40.” ~Bill Walsh
It sounds laughable, but it’s true.
The truth is that you may work very hard in the beginning to make decent money. AND it’ll be a little scary. Because you might fail the first time and the second. But in the end, you will succeed because it’s your choice and your life. And when you want something, you are the only one standing in your way.
YOU CAN DO IT.
Stop being locked into a job or life you hate.
It IS Doable!
You just have to take the first step…And the second!
Make the decision. We did, and we don’t regret it.
So what’s your next step? Isn’t it time to start living your dream?
